Ads are Coming to ChatGPT
What You Need to Know
OpenAI has begun testing advertisements inside ChatGPT, marking a significant shift in how the AI assistant may be monetized and how businesses might reach users in the context of natural conversations.
What's Happening?
In February 2026, OpenAI confirmed that it is rolling out its first live test of ads in ChatGPT. This is the first time ads will appear inside the ChatGPT experience itself.
Ads are currently being tested only in the United States with logged-in adult users on the Free tier and the Go subscription. Higher-tier subscriptions, including Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Education, remain ad-free.
The ads are clearly labeled as sponsored and are shown separately from AI responses, so they never alter or influence the answers ChatGPT gives.
How Ads Are Matched
OpenAI has shared that it will determine which ads to show by:
- Matching the topic of your conversation
- Looking at past chats and previous ad interactions
- Selecting the most relevant sponsored message for your situation
For example, if you’re discussing recipes, you might see ads related to meal kits, grocery services, or kitchen tools. Much like contextual advertising in search engines.
Privacy and Controls
OpenAI emphasizes that advertisers do not have access to your conversations, chat history, personal data, or memories. Only aggregated performance data (e.g., view counts) is shared with brands.
Users also have control over their ad experience, including:
- Dismissing ads
- Turning off personalization
- Viewing and deleting ad activity history
- Opting out of ads (for Free users) in exchange for fewer messages
Why This Matters
This move represents a new moment in conversational AI monetization, shifting beyond subscription revenue to include contextual advertising. Given ChatGPT’s massive global user base, even a small test could change how brands think about reaching audiences in high-intent, real-time interactions.
For businesses and marketers, this opens the door to potentially highly relevant ad placements integrated with the flow of user queries. Similar in spirit to search or in-app advertising, but anchored in conversational moments.
What’s Next
OpenAI frames this as a learning phase. Feedback from the trial will inform how ads evolve in format, personalization, and business models. While ads are currently limited and opt-in for Free users, future iterations could expand both the reach and sophistication of advertising within the AI experience.
